My journey to occupational therapy has been a series of very human moments that brought me closer to the core of how I wanted to contribute to the world. After serving in the US Army (OEF 12-13), I began deeply examining how I could combine purpose and passion outside of military service. I loved elements of direct care, but it was an incomplete experience when I would pass along my patients.
I wanted to see the process of recovery and the steps of progress made day-in and day-out. When we see those we care about hurting, being there with them through their journey back to independence soothes us as well. There was only one profession that I felt really reflected that mindset and led with compassion, and so I scrambled onto the occupational therapy track. 7 years later, I am so proud to say that I have the privilege to start a career in a field I deeply believe in. While I hold a very soft part of my heart for acute care for combat injuries, polytrauma, burns and brain injury, my interests grew in one area in particular, pain: how we experience it, how it affects our lives, our relationships, our participation and our mental health.
After completing clinical rotations in acute care trauma ICU and skilled neurorehabilitation, I continued my path down the continuum of care to Mayer Fascia Wellness’s practice where I got to learn from the best how current science could be integrated into ethical practice. I was able to draw from past continuing education and combine it with a new perspective on the human body. Addressing pain in a holistic and dynamic way from an occupational therapist perspective has brought together elements of the many things I have done in my life prior, from working as a combat medic, to teaching in adult basic education, and working with children with neurodivergences such as ADHD and autism. OT is the glue that seals it all together, wrapping up the aspects in one complete client-centered package that is gifted to those who put their trust in us for their care. I love hearing stories of how our fascia-informed approach helps those we serve live a greater quality of life. Giving someone the tools to make small changes with big outcomes reminds me that even 1000 small steps will make a mile. Looking forward, it’s exciting to see how my unique background and passions can add to the client treatment experiences at Mayer Fascia Wellness!
